This course lays the groundwork for understanding how state and federal regulations impact ethical practices in long term care settings, especially Medicare and Medicaid, OBRA, the Patient Self Determination Act, Resident Rights, and HIPAA. This is followed by an in-depth look at the common sources of ethical errors, and concludes with "real world" examples of ethical dilemmas in LTC. All caregivers will resonate to these dilemmas, and should be aware of the "slippery slope" when involved in resident care, particularly in matters of informed consent, end of life care, and decision making. Participants will appreciate how the course covers the philosophical, regulatory, and practical domains, and how it relates these to everyday care.
