This course clarifies for professional caregivers the interaction between medical and psychological conditions in patients, especially older adults. Many of the thorny assessment, diagnostic, and treatment considerations are explored. Starting with a detailed description of the two DSM diagnoses, mental disorders due to a general medical condition, and psychological factors affecting medical conditions, the presenter shares her professional expertise and knowledge of the older adult, medical population. She outlines a host of medical conditions that either cause depression or mimic depression, and explains the difference. She then cites a number of examples where multiple, medical diagnoses - and the accompanying medications - impact a patient's functioning, and closes with special considerations for treatment planning.
