Let's Talk More about Behavior Medicine and H&B Codes - TELECONFERENCE

By Joseph M. Casciani, PhD

Thursday, Aug 26th, 2010
3:00pm PDT, 4:00 MDT, 5:00 CDT, 6:00 EDT
(01:30:00 hours)

Focus:

With the trend toward sicker patients, and quicker admissions now occurring in nursing homes, the need for behavioral health expertise and consultation is on the rise. This CoHealth presentation takes an in-depth look at the issues in post-acute treatment and where the behavioral health professional fits in: common medical conditions, psychological comorbidities, behavioral assessment tools, and recommended CBT interventions. And, with the health and behavior CPT codes (H&B) at our disposal, psychologists in particular can use these codes precisely what they were designed for: addressing underlying psychological factors that interfere with the recovery from, coping with, or management of primary medical conditions. Examples of H&B assessment methods and interventions will be discussed. Extra time will be set aside for Q&A and case discussion.

Join us for a 90-minute discussion about behavior medicine – including the when, why, and how to use H&B codes – and how mental health services play a role in treating the short-term, sub-acute patient in nursing homes. Remember the adage, “if you don’t have a seat at the table, you’re on the menu!”

LEARNING OBJECTIVES - Participants will be able to:
1. Explain why "quicker and sicker" patients in NH's need behavioral health intervention
2. Differentiate between the behavioral health needs of NH "short stayers" and "long stayers"
3. Describe behavioral health treatment strategies (H&B) for three primary medical conditions
4. Use three H&B assessment tools for treatment planning with primary medical conditions

The speaker, Dr. Joe Casciani, has been working in the field of geropsychology for over 25 years, and has specialized in the development and delivery of mental health programs for older adults in LTC. In recent years, he has focused on bringing psychology services to the short term NH population and advancing the need for greater collaboration between mental health and the medical and rehab staff. Dr. Casciani's companies, Concept Healthcare and CoHealth, the online and live training programs he offers, and his direct services contracts in LTC collectively push for greater recognition of behavioral health professionals in the integrated care of older adults.
